Guest lecturer: Professor Chris Elliott, Professor of Food Safety & Microbiology at Queen’s University Belfast & founder of the Institute for Global Food Security.
Lecture title: From The Nile to Denial – A History Of Food Fraud
Synopsis:Food fraud is often seen as a modern threat, yet its origins stretch back thousands of years. In this lecture, Professor Chris Elliott traces the history of food fraud from ancient times, through the scandals of the industrial revolution to the complex frauds of today’s global supply chains.
The lecture will include an analysis of the SOFHT lunch menu to demonstrate that just about any type of food can be subject to some form of fraud.
Looking ahead, Professor Elliott will explore emerging risks linked to global trade, changing pressures and innovations in food technologies. The key message will be history repeatedly warns us about food fraud and our greatest risk is not treating it as a major problem, until the next major crisis breaks.
