sofht focus
SOFHT’s online magazine contains news and features about any issues affecting the membership such as regulation, legislation, the latest consumer food safety concerns and how to prepare your business for change.
Available in a digital format, it includes a number of updates on the activities of the society, including the Annual Lunch, Lecture & Awards in November.
As a Society run by individuals working within the food industry, SOFHT Focus is also a valuable marketing tool which members can make use of through submitting articles, advertising and other promotions.
Welcome to our Spring 2026 Edition of SOFHT Focus
I hope the lengthening days and returning sunshine have energised you, as they have me.
This Edition reports back on some of that valuable work including the recent successful Innovation Day Conference & Exhibition on 22nd April At The York Biotech Campus.
In February, Sylvia Anderson delivered a talk to the SOFHT Supporting Company Members’ winter meeting, held at the National Liberal Club in London. Sylvia explored a topic that cuts right to the heart of food safety improvement: Learning culture and the barriers to putting taught issues into practice – read more about that in this issue.
One seasonal issue we can’t escape is the post-winter return of flies, heightening risk in food preparation and processing environments. You may therefore be interested in our feature on taking a fresh look at your businesses approach to fly control.
In Re-Tales: My Life As A Supermarket Retail Technologist, SOFHT Director Jackie Healing shares tales from her extensive retail technical experience working in the UK, USA, Asia, and Australia over the last 40 years – a treat and lessons in professional life of interest to anyone in the field wishing to gain insights from her lived experiences.
Not wanting to wish spring away, I’m really looking forward to our SOFHT Summer Lecture and AGM, especially as the Guest Speaker this year is Ian Thomas, Barrister at Gough Square Chambers, London talking about ‘How Food Law Now Protects Our Health As Much As Our Safety’.
Finally, on the topic of speakers, it would be remiss of me not to mention that the Guest Speaker for our Annual Lunch this year is Professor Chris Elliott, Professor of Food Safety and Microbiology at Queen’s University Belfast and founder of the Institute for Global Food Security. His talk ‘ From The Nile to Denial – A History Of Food Fraud’ is likely to be sold-out, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
I hope you find this issue interesting and perhaps I’ll see you at one of future events, such as the AGM in Staffordshire.
As always, I remain very interested to receive feedback on SOFHT Focus, including how it should be shaped to meet member needs.
